Ever since 1666, Lund University has been a seat of education and new ideas. The university is ‘full blown’ regarding its diversity and environments; it can tackle complex problems of knowledge and global challenges. As one of the largest and most reputable universities, with 47,000 students and 7,200 employees worldwide, Lund University has the ambition to offer its own staff and all students a modern and user-friendly IT environment.
The goal was to choose an IT solution to help the university become a desirable workplace that attracts the best people, which leads to it becoming even more interesting for potential students.
To be able to attract the most competent educational staff in Sweden today, it is necessary to compete with more than just the pay packet. A modern and user-friendly IT support system is one such area. User expectations of what constitutes modern and effective IT support are changing at an ever faster pace, which means that previous solutions become obsolete quicker, no matter how technically well-functioning they are.
The devices used today have become more personal with considerably stronger links to the individual. Further, it has been realized that it is no longer possible to add greater value to the hardware, and why you no longer want to put more resources than necessary into this. However, for the soft parts in the IT workplace - such as applications, access to documents and other materials, as well as integration with the organization's systems, needs and working - it is possible to create a modern workplace where users see great added value for their tasks.
To meet the needs of the staff for a simpler and more user-friendly IT environment, the university launched a development project together with Citrix and LDC (the university's own IT supplier). The goal was to help create an even more attractive workplace for current and potential staff, and thus enhance the university's competitiveness.
"The solution was to remove the dependency between hardware on one hand and the service / IT workplace on the other. Ultimately, the IT workplace is entirely independent of both space and hardware, and Citrix products have enabled us to come a long way. We have created a foundation that we consider the future, secure for at least the next few years," says Anders Sjöö Service Manager, LDCs at Lund University.
The old solution was very labor intensive and thus quite expensive, and the university sought a way to simplify, standardize and automate IT workplace delivery. Citrix provided tools for achieving this into the future. The solution is designed by LDC to meet requirements at the strategic level, with the aim of helping Lund to be an attractive university for the future.
"It is almost impossible to calculate the economic value of the new solution, it would contain too many, and too great, uncertainty values. Our solution helps on the whole, if only in a small way, to make Lund University a more attractive workplace," says Anders Sjöö.
The foundation is now laid for what is considered to be a future proof solution, which will contribute to the achievement of the overall strategy to make the Lund University a more attractive workplace for both employees and students.
The current Citrix solution consists of published applications and virtual desktops. It has consciously pursued a simple and proven solution that can easily expand, where the greatest user values can be summarized as increased mobility and flexibility in the association, and reduced hardware dependency.
LDC has implemented the XenApp 6.5 rolled out with Provisioning Services 6.1. It has acquired a new hardware virtualization platform that currently runs on XenServer 6.1. Netscalers and Merchandising Server remain. Web Interface is used for connection via the Receiver, which will eventually be replaced by Cloud Gateway. Applications packaged with the Streaming Profiler are widely used to easily handle upgrades.
The implementation of the Citrix environment is now completed and, for users, it is obvious that they can reach their work-related applications and documents and other materials, independent of device and location. In this situation, the Citrix environment is something that users don’t really notice much; it's just there, like any infrastructure anywhere. But it provides a streamlined, automated and financially very healthy service.
The solution is current being scaled up and the Citrix environment will be expanded with a range of features, including Personal vDisk, printing and much more. It gives basic functionality with a flexible and customizable environment to a large number of users that are linked. Technology is not the major challenge with a Citrix platform as it already has all the tools needed.
